Accident protection for time on the road

See Below For Safe Driver Coverage, Explained in Plain Language

An injury from a motor-vehicle accident can stop your income overnight. Safe Driver coverage pays cash benefits — monthly income, hospitalization money and more — when that happens.

What is safe driver coverage?

Who it's a fit for

Safe Driver is personal accident insurance built around one event: an injury sustained while driving or riding in an automobile, truck or bus. It doesn't replace your auto policy, and it isn't everyday disability insurance — it pays the benefits below when a road accident leaves you hurt: monthly disability income from the first day, daily hospitalization cash, a lump sum for accidental death, and a larger benefit for permanent total disability. Coverage applies on or off the job, throughout Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Best suited for: Commuters and anyone who spends serious hours on the road; self-employed people and incorporated owners whose income stops the moment they do; households whose workplace disability coverage is thin; and anyone who wants simplified underwriting with no medical exam (issue ages 16–80).

What Safe Driver pays for

Current benefit amounts and coverage levels are confirmed together — the descriptions below are the shape of the coverage, not a quote.

Monthly disability income

When it pays: A motor-vehicle accident leaves you totally disabled and under a physician's regular care. Payments start from the first day and continue for up to six months, at the monthly level you choose when you apply.

Worth knowing: You can't be considered disabled under two claims at once — the test is tied to your own occupation.

Hospitalization cash

When it pays: Each day you're hospitalized as a result of a covered accident, a daily amount is paid — up to two months' worth — on top of any disability income.

Accidental death benefit

When it pays: A lump sum to your beneficiary if death results from the accident — paid in addition to everything else under the policy.

Permanent total disability

When it pays: A larger benefit if the accident leaves you permanently unable to work. It's built to grow: the longer the policy is kept, the higher the maximum climbs.

All Accident Rider (optional)

When it pays: Monthly disability income for accidents of any kind — not just road accidents — with partial-disability benefits for up to three months at half the monthly amount.

How "total disability" is judged

Plain-language summary — the policy wording governs in all circumstances.

Total disability — the monthly income test

The test: Because of the accident injury, you're under a physician's regular and personal care, unable to perform the important daily duties of your own occupation or profession, and not gainfully employed in any other occupation. For homemakers, the test is the ability to handle normal household duties. Disability is deemed to begin with your first medical treatment after the accident.

What this means: It's an own-occupation test with a work test attached — you can't collect while doing other paid work, and your physician's care is part of the claim from day one.

Permanent total disability — the stricter test

The test: Three things must all be true: you've already received total-disability benefits for six months; you've been permanently disabled for at least twelve months; and you're permanently unable to engage in any employment or occupation for wage or profit — any work, not just your own.

What this means: Once permanent total disability benefits begin, the policy has done its job and terminates. The benefit itself is larger, and grows the longer the policy is kept before the accident.

Good to know

  • • This is personal accident coverage, not auto insurance — your auto and home policies are placed through my referral partners
  • • Benefits pay regardless of other benefits you receive — no coordination or claw-back
  • • Guaranteed renewable to age 85, with no change to your premium because of your own health or claims history
  • • It's accident-based: illness and disease are not covered — that's what disability and critical illness policies are for
  • • Some restrictions and exclusions apply — the policy wording governs, and we'll walk the details together before anything is decided

General information, not personal advice — details, eligibility and pricing depend on the insurer and the specific product, and are confirmed before anything is recommended.
